Conspiring to Be part of the Magic on Inspiration Thursday and Every Day!

What is life? It is the flash of the firefly in the night. It is the breath of the buffalo in the wintertime. It is the little shadow that runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset. – crowfoot-thinkexist.com

Hello my lovely readers!

It has been too long. We are finally settled in our new bug free home and the tendonitis in my arm caused by my cane has flared down enough for me to write again! Not as much or as often as I’d like, but some is definitely better than none. Speaking of flares but of a different sort I am excited to share Lilian Moore’s poem which is a rhymed tercet:

If You Catch a Firefly

If you catch a firefly
and keep it in a jar
You may find that
            you have lost
A tiny star.
If you let it go then,
            back into the night,
You may see it
            once again
Star bright.

as well as the beautiful Ted Talk by Firefly expert, Sara Lewis, which you will find at the bottom of the page.
Connecting to and conspiring to be a part of the “ordinary magic” of the every day is what I regularly aim to do and offer to other’s.
Some days are easier than others. Busy lives and busy minds make it harder to slow down long enough to focus our attention on touching, tasting, hearing, smelling and seeing life’s beauty in all its shapes, sounds, sizes and styles. And yet this gift is here already, both within and without, just waiting for us to open it and to open to it by harnessing and reclaiming the power of our senses!
This week I found it in the simple joy of hugging my daughter goodnight, and petting Satine Bunny, and by arranging the 7.99 bouquet of rainbow roses from Trader Joe’s into bud vases and scattering them through out the house. I found it in the sound of the wind chines in the pines, and saw it in the glistening droplets of light on the dark green waxy leaves of my neighbor’s trees in the late. late afternoon light, and in the way their branches have grown towards each other as if to form one cool green forest of lace against the hot blue summer sky. (Where do you find it? I’d love to know)
Whilst all the seasons have their charms –I couldn’t live without steaming cups of tea and snuggling up in front of the fireplace in the long white silences of winters, or Spring’s explosion of desert wildflowers, or the crunchy golden and copper Autumn leaves -I already did that for 8 years in Hawaii. Summer is the season I have most associated with magic. The touch of the cool water on my browned skin as we ran through the sprinklers, to the sparklers and fireworks on the 4th of July, to childhood memories of listening out for and then chasing after the ice-cream truck, to the sweet orange taste of a Creamsicle on my tongue, to riding our bicycles across car free Fire Island and then toasting marshmallows as we waited and watched with wonder for the arrival of the fireflies, sparkling like mica in the night.
XO, SABRINA
